Bequest

Bequest

William "Pat" Flannagan '74 grew up in Bristol, Tennessee, just a few blocks away from King University, so it was an easy decision to select King following his high school graduation. He will be the first to admit that choice became one of the most important decisions of his life. From his earliest days at King, Pat became involved with the Symphonic Choir and, under the influence of Dr. C.C. Loomis, those relationships truly changed the course of his life.

While at King, Pat had the good fortune to meet Elizabeth "Beth" Luffman '74 who had followed in her older sister's footsteps to come to King from Berryville, Virginia. Pat and Beth connected through their participation in the Symphonic Choir, married in 1974, and have been happily married for the past 50+ years.

For many, Pat will always be associated with the Choir and the Music Department because of his long-standing tenure at the institution. He was a proud faculty member for 38 years before his retirement in 2020, and is known for his accomplishments leading the Choir and restructuring the entire music curriculum. He travelled with the Choir all across the north and southeast, performing at churches, with local symphonies, for civic clubs, at Carnegie Hall, and made three trips to Europe with members of the Choir. He and the Choir modeled the "King way of living" and helped to inform others about the school.

Both Beth and Pat agree that their formative years at King provided the foundation for their careers and changed their lives. "Beth and I were blessed by the strength of the King community, and even today, our King friends are our extended family, despite all the years that have passed. King provided the right balance of being part of a big family but also allowed us to grow, mature, fail, and learn from our failures," said Pat.

The Flannagans have supported King for years with financial gifts and continue to serve as key volunteers for committees and projects. But when seriously considering their end-of-life plans, it was no surprise that they included King in their wills. "We love King and appreciate all that this school provided us as students, and throughout our lifetimes. We want to pay it forward for the next generation and are pleased to remember King with a legacy even after we are gone."
